Permaculture Designer David Shaw Talk at Fairfield Library @ Fairfield Civic Center Library
Aug 26 @ 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

David demonstrating pruning techniques at one of our 2017 Walk in a Food Forest Tour and Talks.

Join Sustainable Solano in welcoming back permaculture expert David Shaw for an inspirational, educational, practical and down-to-earth talk about building connections with ourselves, each other, and with nature to inaugurate our Fairfield Sustainable Backyard Program.

David is an educator, ecological designer, farmer and musician.

David has been teaching agroecology and sustainable living at UC Santa Cruz since 2004, and in 2012 founded the UCSC Common Ground Center, offering a suite of programs for social justice, economic resilience, and ecological sustainability. He founded Santa Cruz Permaculture in 2016 in order to work with the Santa Cruz community more broadly. Additionally, he works for the Regenerative Design Institute as an instructor for their 4 Seasons Permaculture Design Certificate Course, and is a member of the global World Cafe Stewardship Council, a group dedicated to hosting inter-generational dialogue on questions that matter. David holds a MS in Integrative Eco Social Design from Gaia University, and continues his community based action-research on the theory and practice of social justice and sustainability.

In order to meet the challenges of today, he is creating an urban farm and inter-generational learning center that fosters hands-on farm and wilderness skills, cultural competence, entrepreneurial spirit, conversational leadership, and collective action. He lives happily and humbly on a 2-acre homestead in Santa Cruz.

His talk will focus on global sustainability, resiliency, permaculture and sustainable backyards.

This talk is FREE and open to the public at the Fairfield library. Just showing up is always welcomed! But registering in advance is appreciated so we can best host you. You will not want to miss this opportunity.

Home composting workshops: Turning your “waste” into “want” @ Greyhawk Grove, Benicia
Sep 9 @ 10:00 am – 11:45 am

Sustainable Solano, in partnership with Republic Services, presents an educational series in Benicia “Healthy Soil, Healthy Planet”.

Are you looking for a more sustainable way to landscape your yard? Do you want to grow more nutritious and delicious food? Would you like to compost at home, but are concerned about space constraints, rodents and foul smells?

Join us for a conversation with Kathleen Huffman, a permaculture designer and a local sustainable landscaper, who will help connect the dots between soil health, plant health, and human health.

This presentation will cover all aspects of composting in residential environments.  We will discuss the basics of what composting is and the various methods used to compost, including the use of earthworms.

The class meets at one of the Benicia Demonstration Food Forests for a hands-on experience and demonstrations on how to create small composting areas for your yard and how to directly manage soil health within the garden.  A study of soil conditions within the garden and possible solutions to any problems found will be discussed.  Those attending will leave with numerous simple and inexpensive techniques to begin composting at home!

Kathleen Huffman will lead both workshops, so the content will be similar, but the locations are different – plan to attend both to see two beautiful and productive Benicia permaculture food forests!

The format of the two hands-on workshops is the following: 45 min presentation and 45 – 60 min outdoor demonstrating. Workshops will take place in Benicia Demonstration Food Forests to allow attendees to see how healthy soil looks like under mulch, let people touch and smell good soil, and practice simple tool and techniques. Both locations have chickens, “an ultimate waste transformation creatures” as an added bonus to expand people’s understanding of backyard sustainability.

Dates of workshops:

Saturday, June 24, Birds, Bees and Beyond Demo Garden

Saturday, September 9, Greyhawk Grove Demo Garden

The event is FREE and open to everyone, but please register here so we can comfortably accommodate everyone.
