Benicia Community Gardens is excited to announce the 2016 demonstration food forest installation schedule. The installations are free events and we invite all community members to attend. The hands-on installations will teach you how to transform your own yard into a productive, lush, water-saving ecosystem. Over the next few months, we will work together to convert three front yards into thriving food forests. We hope to see you there!

The Food Forests

The Curious Garden

Wendy and John have a background in permaculture and organic gardening, and have a passion for teaching. Their 2,000+ sq. ft. front yard will be the site of their food forest, which they will use as a “classroom” for their family and the community.

Installation Details

The food forest installations take place over three days at each site. They are held on Saturdays (specific dates listed above), from 9am-4pm. Lunch is provided by the homeowners. Please bring your own rain gear, hats, gloves, water bottles, and sunblock (and if you have any dietary restrictions, your own food). The workshop will be rescheduled if there is heavy rain. All community members are welcome to participate in installations and will learn how to prepare a site, choose and place plants, install greywater and drip irrigation systems, and how to take care of the food forests in the future.

Day 1: Foundation – Design, Water, Earthwork, Trees

At this workshop, we will learn about water movement, swales, and the design of the food forest. We’ll show you how much secondary water is hidden in your home – rainwater harvested in the ground and from the roof, “laundry to landscape” greywater, and drip irrigation as a backup. At this stage we will begin planting fruit trees.

Day 2: “Laundry to Landscape” Greywater System

Hands-on class on how to install a simple laundry-to-landscape greywater system for your house. You will learn how to install a simple three-way valve in your laundry room, connect piping from your washing machine to your landscape, and how to prepare your landscape to receive the greywater. Attendees must pre-register for the event as space is limited (links to registration above).

Day 3: Putting it Together – Planting, Irrigation, Mulching

At the final installation date, we will finish planting, install drip irrigation systems, and mulch the food forest.
