Dear friends and members of Benicia Community Gardens,

We have important news to share with you:  after serious reflection and long deliberation, the BCG Board has made a decision to rename Benicia Community Gardens to Sustainable Solano – a name that better reflects our current scope, mission and vision.

Since 1999, BCG has worked relentlessly to bring local sustainable food to Benicia. Over the years, our mission expanded from a single community garden on the corner of Military West and 2d Street (this garden now carries the name of its founder, late Dr. Swenson) to two community gardens, an orchard, seven permaculture demonstration food forests throughout Benicia, Community Supported Agriculture partnership with five local farms and food providers, a sustainable landscaping education program and our beloved “What’s for Dinner?” educational series.

With two county-wide programs now underway – Sustainable Solano Landscaping (based on our “Wise Water” approach) and Vallejo/Benicia Food Center, it became clear to the Board that not only has the organization grown beyond our Benicia hometown – is has also outgrown its name – Benicia Community Gardens. We realized the need for a new name to match our new programs’ boundaries across Solano County.

The board would like to reassure all of our Benician friends and members that Benicia remains our “home town” with a special place in our hearts and a special focus of our work. We’ve made sure that “Benicia Community Gardens” remains a strong program of the expanded organizational structure as we move forward. Benicia Community Gardens Program (our two community gardens and orchard) will always have special status expressive of the birthplace of our non-profit. To ensure that distinction, we are amending the bylaws to include a special provision that will indefinitely secure the administrative support of “Sustainable Solano” for the Benicia Community Gardens Program.

We hope you will embrace our bigger vision and join our work to make the entire county a more beautiful and sustainable place to live.

Warm regards,
BCG Board
